Types of Breast Implants
- Most commonly used in the UK
- Filled with cohesive silicone gel for a soft, natural feel
- Less prone to rippling than saline implants
- Rarely used in the UK
- Filled with sterile saltwater
- Can be inserted empty and filled once in position
- Slightly firmer feel, but may be suitable for specific patient preferences
- Contains a silicone outer shell
Surgical Approach and Implant Placement
- Inframammary fold (breast crease): Most common and hidden in the natural fold beneath the breast
- Periareolar (around the nipple): Sometimes used for smaller implants or revision cases
- Axillary (armpit): Rarely used due to the risk of infection
- Subglandular (over the muscle): Suitable for patients with sufficient breast tissue, offers quicker recovery
- Subfascial (over the muscle, but under the muscle covering): Suitable for patients with sufficient breast tissue, offers quicker recovery
- Submuscular (partially under the muscle): Preferred for thinner patients or when a more natural contour is desired

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
- Initial Consultation: You’ll meet with Mr Milligan to discuss your goals, expectations, and medical history.
- Pre-Op Planning: Implant size, shape, and position are selected. You may have sizing sessions or digital imaging.
- Surgery Day: You’ll arrive at the surgical centre, be placed under anaesthetic, and your implants will be inserted through small, carefully positioned incisions.
- Post-Operative Care: You’ll wake up in a recovery suite, and most patients go home the same day. Support bras and aftercare instructions are provided.
Breast Augmentation Recovery Timeline
Modern implants are long-lasting and durable. While not considered “lifetime” devices, many last 10–15 years or longer. Replacement is only necessary if a problem arises or you wish to change size. However, we do recommend regular check ups if they have been in place for 10 years or longer.
Yes. With careful implant selection, appropriate placement, and expert surgical technique, your results can look and feel incredibly natural.
In most cases, yes. Breastfeeding is often still possible, especially when implants are placed under the muscle and the milk ducts are not disturbed.
Mr Milligan uses small incisions placed in discreet areas such as the breast crease to minimise visible scarring. Scars usually fade significantly within 6–12 months.
Breast augmentation is a widely performed and safe procedure when done by an experienced specialist. All surgery carries some risk, which will be thoroughly discussed during your consultation.
Size depends on your chest width, skin elasticity, and your desired look. Mr Milligan will guide you through sizing using physical sizers and visual aids.
