Breast Augmentation in Newcastle and Gateshead: What to Expect Before, During, and After Surgery
A complete guide from Consultant Cosmetic Breast Surgeon, Mr Rob Milligan
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the UK and for many women in Newcastle, Gateshead and the wider Northeast, it’s a life-changing decision that boosts body confidence and self-esteem.
If you’re considering breast augmentation, understanding the journey from first consultation to full recovery is key to feeling informed and confident in your decision.
As a leading breast augmentation surgeon in Newcastle, I’ve created this comprehensive guide so you know exactly what to expect before, during, and after your surgery.
Why Choose Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation can help if you:
- Want to enhance naturally small breasts
- Wish to restore lost volume after pregnancy or weight loss (including Ozempic or Mounjaro related)
- Desire improved symmetry between breasts
- Are looking for a more proportionate figure
Every woman’s goals are unique and the right surgical plan should be tailored to your anatomy, lifestyle, and expectations.
Step 1: Your Initial Consultation in the Newcastle or Gateshead Clinic
Your journey starts with a detailed one-to-one consultation at my clinic.
We’ll discuss:
- Your goals and expectations – what size, shape, and feel you’re hoping for
- Your lifestyle – to help select an implant type that suits your activities
- Implant options – round or anatomical (teardrop), smooth or textured
- Placement options – over or under the chest muscle
- Incision sites – most often in the breast crease for a discreet scar
Step 2: Preparing for Surgery
Before your operation, you’ll receive personalised pre-op instructions,
which may include:
- Arranging time off work (most patients take 1–2 weeks)
- Avoiding smoking and certain medications for a set period
- Organising help at home for the first few days after surgery
We’ll also carry out a full medical assessment to ensure you’re in good health for the procedure.
Step 3: The Day of Surgery
Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anaesthetic and takes around 60–90 minutes.
What happens in theatre:
- Your chosen incision is made (usually in the breast crease)
- The implant is placed in the agreed position (over or under the muscle)
- The incision is closed with dissolvable stitches and dressings are applied
- A supportive surgical bra is fitted
Most patients can go home the same day.
Step 4: Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery is a gradual process and my role is to guide you every step of the way.
First week:
- Mild swelling, tightness, and discomfort (managed with pain relief)
- Gentle movement encouraged – no heavy lifting
- Wear your surgical bra 24/7
Weeks 2–6:
- Return to light daily activities
- Gradual return to work and driving
- Swelling starts to reduce and your new shape becomes more visible
After 6 weeks:
- Resume full exercise and bra shopping for your new size
- Implants settle into their final position (“drop and fluff”)
You’ll have regular follow-up appointments in my Newcastle or Gateshead clinics to ensure healing is on track
