Mastectomy for Breast Cancer
Expert Mastectomy Surgery in Newcastle and Gateshead | Mr Milligan, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon
Mastectomy for Breast Cancer in Newcastle
Mastectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing breast tissue, often performed to treat or prevent breast cancer. At Mr Milligan’s clinic in Newcastle, we offer advanced mastectomy techniques tailored to each individual, combining oncological safety with cosmetic expertise.
As one of the UK’s leading oncoplastic breast surgeons and the first to perform the “no-scar” endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy, Mr Milligan provides compassionate, expert care throughout your entire breast cancer journey.
Who Might Need a Mastectomy?
You may be advised to undergo a mastectomy if:
- You have invasive breast cancer affecting a large portion of the breast
- There are multiple areas of cancer within the same breast where breast conservation surgery is not possible
- You’ve previously had radiotherapy and a lumpectomy isn’t suitable
- You have lobular ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) that is widespread
- You carry a BRCA1, BRCA2 or other high-risk genetic mutation and wish to reduce your future cancer risk (risk-reducing mastectomy)
Types of Mastectomy Procedures
Mr Milligan offers a range of mastectomy techniques to ensure the best outcome — both oncologically and aesthetically.
1. Simple (Total) Mastectomy
Removes the entire breast tissue, including the nipple and areola. Used for patients who choose or require mastectomy but do not with to have breast reconstruction.
2. Skin-Sparing Mastectomy (SSM)
Preserves the skin envelope of the breast while removing the underlying breast tissue and nipple. It is rare that the nipple needs removing, so Mr Milligan does not commonly perform this procedure. Ideal for immediate reconstruction.
3. Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (NSM)
Provides the best post-operative cosmetic outcomes. Preserves both the skin and the nipple-areola complex. Not suitable for patients with cancer involving the nipple.
4. Endoscopic Nipple-Sparing Mastectomy (ENSM) – INVISISCAR™️ Mastectomy
A cutting-edge, minimally invasive approach performed through a hidden incision (e.g. in the armpit). Mr Milligan is the first UK surgeon to perform this procedure, offering patients an excellent cosmetic result with no visible breast scar.
